A Prayer for When It Is Hard to Feel Thankful

Living with a Heart of Gratitude · 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

By Ricardo Zaal, Founder and Lead Pastor ·

Pray this now

God, I am not finding it easy to say thank you right now. The thing I am carrying has worn me thin, and I do not have big words left. But I know you have not moved. Help me see one thing today that came from your hand. Give me strength inside this, even if nothing changes by tonight. Hold me steady when the worry comes back. I bring you what is left of me. Thank you that it is enough. Amen.

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."

- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

1. Prayer Requests

If you need Healing, Provision, Peace, Wisdom, Restoration, send it to us on WhatsApp. We pray over every request on Thursday.

2. Acknowledging God's Unchanging Goodness

  • God, we thank you that you have stayed faithful to us even when we stopped counting.
  • Lord, we praise you for a love that has not run out on us yet.
  • Father, we thank you for what you have provided that we forgot to notice.
  • Lord, we thank you for mercy that met us long before we had cleaned ourselves up.
  • Jesus, we worship you because you stay near when everything around us keeps shifting.

Why we pray this: Thanking God first changes what we can see. It pulls our eyes off the one thing that is wrong and onto the things that have quietly held. Gratitude does that work in us before it ever does anything to our circumstances.

3. Strength for the Parent Working Two Jobs

  • Father, give us energy for the hours ahead of us, long after we wanted to stop.
  • Lord, hold us steady in the middle of pressure we cannot put down today.
  • God, put joy in us that does not rise and fall with how tired we are.
  • Lord, keep hope alive in us while we wait for a door you may open.

Why we pray this: Tiredness makes everything look worse than it is. God gives strength to people who are worn out, and He stays close to the ones who are breaking. So we ask for the strength, out loud, on a Thursday evening at 19:00 in Pretoria North.

4. Provision for the Family Facing Financial Strain

  • God, give us wisdom for the decisions we have to make before this month ends.
  • Father, teach us to trust you with what we cannot yet see a way through.
  • Lord, quiet the worry that wakes us up before the alarm does.
  • God, open doors we have not thought to knock on.

Why we pray this: God has always been the one who provides. Jehovah Jireh is not a slogan we shout; it is a name we lean on when the numbers are short. Praying it does not remove the pressure, but it puts the pressure in front of someone who can carry it.

5. Healing for Relationships Under Strain

  • Lord, give us patience when we are misunderstood and nobody is asking for our side.
  • Jesus, help us forgive where the hurt is still fresh and no apology has come.
  • God, rebuild trust slowly in us where it was broken quickly.
  • Father, give us love wide enough to cover the differences we keep arguing about.

Why we pray this: Some wounds go deep and stay quiet for years. God's love reaches those places and heals them. We pray it as a room because most of us are carrying a silence with someone we love.

6. Faith for the Person Facing a Difficult Diagnosis

  • God, strengthen us through what is long, slow and hard to sit through.
  • Lord, take the edge off the fear that comes back at night.
  • Father, keep hope alive in us when the news is heavy.
  • Jesus, comfort the people who love us and feel helpless watching.

Why we pray this: Bad news puts fear in the room fast. God is our healer and our hope, and both matter on the days when nothing is certain. We pray for strength in the waiting as much as for the outcome.

7. Encouragement for the Sleepless Nights

  • Lord, give us rest tonight even when our thoughts refuse to switch off.
  • God, quiet the loop running in our heads at 2am.
  • Father, meet us with new strength each morning, even after a short night.
  • Jesus, we trust you to keep watch over us while we sleep.

Why we pray this: The worst hours are usually the dark ones. God is awake then, and He is peace to people who cannot find any. Ask Him for rest before you scroll.

8. Hope for Those Seeking Employment

  • God, help us trust your timing when the waiting has gone longer than we planned.
  • Lord, open doors that we cannot open ourselves.
  • Father, give us patience while nothing seems to be moving.
  • Lord, give us confidence that you have not forgotten what we need.

Why we pray this: Waiting wears people down. God sees the need before we type the application, and He opens doors in His timing. We pray for patience because that is what the waiting asks of us.

Pray these at home this week

On Thursday we pray the points above together. The ones below are yours for the week.

9. Guidance for the Student Facing Exams (prayed at home during the week, not in the meeting)

  • Father, hold our focus steady when everything else is pulling at it.
  • Lord, bring clarity where our minds go blank.
  • God, keep us calm when the pressure peaks.
  • Jesus, give us wisdom to answer well with what we have learned.
  • Lord, help us trust the work we have already put in.

Why we pray this: James says God gives wisdom to anyone who asks, without making them feel small for asking. So ask. Study anyway, and pray while the loadshedding takes the lights out halfway through a chapter.

10. Comfort for the Grieving Heart (prayed at home during the week, not in the meeting)

  • Father, give us peace in a sorrow that has no quick way out.
  • Lord, keep hope alive in us when loss has taken the shape of every day.
  • God, give us strength for today only, and then again tomorrow.
  • Jesus, thank you for the memories that still carry love in them.
  • Lord, surround us with people who stay after the crowd goes home.

Why we pray this: God is close to people with broken hearts. He does not rush them. Grief runs long after the funeral, so we pray for strength one day at a time.

11. Guidance for Major Life Decisions (prayed at home during the week, not in the meeting)

  • God, give us wisdom for the choice we keep turning over in our minds.
  • Lord, hold us steady while the outcome is still unclear.
  • Father, make the next step clear enough for us to take it.
  • Jesus, give us confidence to walk forward without seeing the whole road.

Why we pray this: Proverbs says to trust God with everything and He will direct our paths. Direction usually comes one step at a time. We pray for enough light for the next step, and the nerve to take it.

Why pray this?

Does God stay the same even when my life falls apart?

Yes. His character does not shift with our circumstances, even when everything else does. Praying this out loud gives you something solid to stand on when your week has no stable ground. It also trains your eyes to spot the good you have been walking past.

Is it okay to tell God I am exhausted?

Completely. The Bible is full of tired people saying so, and God answers them with strength rather than a lecture. Saying it out loud takes the shame off being worn out. Then you can ask for what you need.

Does praying about money change anything?

It changes the one praying first. Prayer brings clarity for the decisions in front of you and lifts the panic that makes people choose badly. God has provided for His people before, and asking Him is not weakness. Keep working, keep asking.

How do I forgive someone who has not said sorry?

You start by telling God you cannot do it yet. Forgiveness is a decision you make more than once, usually long before the feelings catch up. Praying it releases you from carrying the offence around all day. Trust is rebuilt slowly after that, and that is normal.

What do I pray when the doctor gives bad news?

Pray for strength for today and peace for tonight. God is able to heal, and He is also near in the waiting rooms where nothing is decided yet. Ask for comfort for the people who love you too, because they are scared as well.

Why can I not sleep when I am worried?

Your mind keeps hunting for a solution you do not have at 2am. Praying hands the problem over instead of chewing it. It will not always knock you out, but it gives your thoughts somewhere else to land. Ask God to keep watch, then rest.

Why is God taking so long to give me a job?

Nobody can give you the timeline, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. What we can say is that God sees the need and has opened doors for people who felt forgotten. Pray for patience, keep applying, and let someone in the room pray with you. Waiting alone is heavier.

Can I pray about exams or is that too small?

Nothing that keeps you awake is too small to bring to God. Ask for focus, clarity and calm, then do the work. Prayer is not a shortcut around studying. It steadies you while you study.

How long is grief supposed to last?

There is no set time, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. God stays close to broken-hearted people for as long as it takes. Praying for strength for one day at a time is enough. Let people near you, especially the ones who keep showing up.

How do I know if I am making the right decision?

Usually you get enough light for the next step rather than the whole map. Ask God for wisdom, talk it through with someone who knows you, and watch what settles in you over time. Peace in the uncertainty is a real answer, even before the outcome is clear.

We pray these together every Thursday
