A Prayer for When You Can't Feel Thankful Anymore
Living a Life of Gratitude · 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Pretoria North · 6 July 2026
Pray this now
God, I am tired, and I cannot find much to be thankful for tonight. The thing that hurts has not moved. I am not going to pretend it has. But I am here, and I am asking you to hold me steady while it stays. Remind me of one good thing you have already done for me. Give me enough strength for tomorrow, and then for the day after that. I do not need it all fixed today. I need you close. Amen.
"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."
- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18Scripture taken from the Holy Bible, New International Version, NIV. Used by permission.
1. Prayer Requests
If you need Healing, Provision, Peace, Wisdom, Restoration, send it to us on WhatsApp. We pray over every request on Thursday.
2. Cultivating a Thankful Heart
- Father, open our eyes to the small mercies we walked past today without noticing.
- Lord, teach us to thank you while we are still waiting for something to change.
- God, remind us this week how you carried us through what we thought would break us.
- Lord, we thank you for food on the table and breath in our lungs today.
Why we pray this: Thankfulness is a skill before it is a feeling. You practise it by naming what God has already done, even when the list is short. Start with the last thing that went right, however small.
3. Rejoicing in All Circumstances
- God, we ask for joy that does not rise and fall with our week.
- Jesus, be near us in the place we are weakest, and let us know you are there.
- Lord, when our feelings argue against your goodness, hold our faith steady anyway.
- Father, lift our eyes past what is in front of us to what lasts forever.
Why we pray this: Joy that comes from God can sit in the same room as grief. We are not asked to feel cheerful about hard things. We are asked to keep looking at the One who has not left.
4. Thanksgiving as a Form of Worship
- God, receive our thanks tonight as worship, even when it is quiet and unpolished.
- Lord, let our gratitude honour you in the rooms where nobody else is watching.
- Father, shape the ordinary hours of our week into worship that pleases you.
- Jesus, we praise you with hearts that mean every word we say.
Why we pray this: Worship often starts with one honest thank you. It does not need a band or a full church. Some of the truest worship in Pretoria North happens over a sink full of dishes during loadshedding.
5. Prayerful Dependence on God
- Father, keep us talking with you through the ordinary hours of every day.
- Lord, we hand you the worry we have been carrying since before sunrise.
- God, we trust you to provide what we need, even when we cannot see how.
- Lord, give us your wisdom where ours has run out.
Why we pray this: Praying often is how trust shows up in a normal week. You talk to God because you actually believe he is listening. Stop carrying the thing alone.
6. Seeing God's Work in Others
- God, thank you for the good you are doing in the people around us.
- Father, thank you for those who showed up for us when we could not ask.
- Lord, let us be genuinely glad when someone else receives what we have prayed for.
- Jesus, thank you for the brothers and sisters who keep believing with us.
Why we pray this: Noticing God at work in someone else pulls us out of ourselves. It also builds a church that holds together. Gladness for another person costs nothing and changes a room.
7. Strengthening Faith Through Gratitude
- God, let remembering your goodness make our faith stronger than our fear.
- Lord, thank you for every promise you have already kept for us.
- Father, bring back to mind the stories of what you have done before.
- God, anchor our hope in what we already know of you.
Why we pray this: Memory feeds faith. When you go back over what God has done, the next hard thing looks less final. Ricardo often asks the room on a Thursday to say one thing out loud that God did last year.
8. Witnessing Through a Grateful Spirit
- Lord, let our thankfulness be something people notice without us saying a word.
- God, make our lives a plain testimony of what you have done.
- Jesus, draw people to you through the way we carry our hard days.
- Father, let your light shine through us wherever we go this week.
Why we pray this: People watch how you handle the bad weeks more than the good ones. A thankful person in a tough season raises questions. That is where conversations about Jesus usually start.
Why pray this?
What if I genuinely have nothing to be thankful for right now?
Then start with one thing, even if it feels too small to count. Gratitude is not a report card on how good your life is. Praying it while things are still bad trains your eyes to see God moving. Most people find the list grows once they begin.
Is it fake to praise God when I feel awful?
No, it is honest, as long as you tell him how you actually feel first. God is not asking you to perform happiness. Praying through the ache is what the Bible calls faith. Say both things: this hurts, and you are still good.
Does saying thank you to God actually count as worship?
Yes. Worship is any moment you turn toward God and mean it, and thank you is one of the oldest ways people have done that. You do not need music or a building. A whispered thanks in the car counts.
How do I pray when my mind will not stop racing?
Say one short sentence and stop there. Prayer is not a speech you have to get right. Handing God one worry at a time is enough, and you can come back five minutes later with the next one.
Why does it hurt to watch other people get what I want?
Because you are human and the waiting is real. That feeling is not a sign your faith is broken. Praying to be glad for someone else loosens the grip of envy over time, and it usually softens the loneliness too.
Does remembering the past really help my faith?
It does, more than most people expect. Fear lives in what might happen next, and memory brings you back to what has already happened. Write down two or three things God has done for you and read them when the next hard week lands.
Can being thankful really make a difference to anyone else?
Yes, especially when your life is not easy. People notice steadiness they cannot explain. You may never hear about it, but your calm on a bad day gives someone else permission to hope.
