A Prayer When God Feels Far and Life Feels Heavy
The Fear of the Lord · Proverbs 9:10
Pretoria North · 8 June 2026
Pray this now
God, I am tired and I do not have the words tonight. Things I cannot fix are still sitting in front of me, and I have been carrying them alone. I do not expect it all to disappear by morning. But hold me steady inside it. Help me see you clearly again. Give me enough strength for tomorrow, and enough honesty to keep coming back to you when I would rather hide. Amen.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."
- Proverbs 9:10Scripture taken from the Holy Bible, New International Version, NIV. Used by permission.
1. Prayer Requests
If you need Healing, Provision, Peace, Wisdom, Restoration, send it to us on WhatsApp. We pray over every request on Thursday.
2. Awakening a Right View of God
- God, show us who you really are, and let that sight steady us.
- Lord, open our eyes to see you clearly, even in a week that has left us tired.
- Father, give us hearts that take you seriously when it would be easier to shrug.
- God, break the small picture of you we have carried, and give us a bigger one.
Why we pray this: Most of our panic comes from a shrunken idea of God. When we see him as he is, the rest of life finds its place. So we start here, before we ask for anything.
3. Repentance and Clean Hands
- Father, we bring our wrong to you honestly, with nothing dressed up.
- Lord, we open the parts of us we have kept shut, including the one we avoid.
- God, give us sorrow that runs deeper than being sorry we were caught.
- Jesus, give us grace to turn and keep walking away from what keeps pulling us back.
- Lord, soften the places in us that have gone numb.
Why we pray this: Turning back to God with a whole heart is the point. Managing guilt only shuffles the shame around and leaves us tired. Coming clean is lighter than hiding.
4. Walking in Obedience
- God, give us the will to do what you say when it costs us something.
- Lord, make us willing where we have been stubborn.
- Father, give us strength to follow you when we cannot see the whole picture.
- God, help us choose your way over the way that feels easier tonight.
- Jesus, let our lives match the words we pray out loud.
Why we pray this: We do what God says because we love and respect him. Favour was never something we could buy. This is love acting, on an ordinary weekday.
5. Wisdom for Everyday Decisions
- Lord, guide us in the small choices this week and in the ones that keep us awake at 2am.
- God, give us discernment to tell right from wrong when both look reasonable.
- Father, keep us from foolish choices we would spend years undoing.
- Lord, teach us to come to you first, before we ask everyone else.
- God, give us wisdom with the people and the duties you have placed in our hands.
Why we pray this: Wisdom is living each day in the light of who God is. Cleverness can still walk you off a cliff. A wise person asks God before the deadline, not after the damage.
6. Boldness and Courage in Faith
- Father, let a deep respect for you loosen the grip of what people think.
- God, give us courage to stand for what is right when standing is lonely.
- Lord, help us speak the truth without shame and without cruelty.
- Jesus, hold our faith steady when the pressure comes.
Why we pray this: When awe of God grows, the opinions of people lose their hold. That is where courage comes from. Not from a loud personality.
7. Holiness in Our Homes and Relationships
- God, be honoured in the places where we are most ourselves.
- Lord, build our closest relationships on truth and plain respect.
- Father, make us the same people on a Thursday night as on a Sunday morning.
- God, teach those who share our days to walk in awe of you.
- Jesus, let the people who watch us closely see faith that is real.
Why we pray this: Holiness is who we are when no one is watching. The people nearest us already know which version is true. We ask God to close the gap.
8. Hunger for God Himself
- Father, give us hunger for you, more than for the things we ask you for.
- Lord, let us find rest in your presence when nothing else satisfies.
- God, turn our hearts to seek your face this week.
- Jesus, take us deeper into knowing you.
- Lord, give us contentment that holds even when nothing around us changes.
Why we pray this: Blessings are good and we keep asking for them. But a heart that only chases the gift stays hungry. We are after God himself.
Why pray this?
Why does God feel so far away right now?
Distance is usually something we feel rather than something that is true. Pain, exhaustion and a long stretch of bad news all shrink our picture of God down to nothing. Praying for clearer eyes is one of the first things that starts to shift. Say it even if you feel nothing while you say it.
Do I have to fix myself before I can pray?
No. You bring the mess as it is, which is exactly what repentance means. Honesty with God is the door, and shame usually keeps us standing outside it. Start with one sentence about the thing you would rather not mention.
What if I obey God and nothing changes?
Obedience is not a vending machine, and God does not owe us a result by Friday. We do what he says because of who he is, and the fruit of that often shows up slowly. Many people at our Thursday meeting in Pretoria North have prayed the same thing for years before seeing movement. Keep going.
How do I know if a decision is from God or just my own idea?
Slow down and check it against scripture, wise people who know you, and your conscience. God rarely rushes anyone into a decision. Praying for discernment trains you to notice the difference between a strong feeling and a clear leading. If it only works when you hide it, that is your answer.
How do I stop caring so much what people think of me?
It loosens when something bigger takes up the space. Awe of God does that over time. Praying for courage does not remove the nerves, but it gives you something steadier to stand on when you have to speak up.
Why do I act like a different person at church?
Because performing is easier than changing, and most of us have done it. God is more interested in the version of you that shows up during loadshedding with no audience around. Praying this line week after week slowly closes the gap between the two.
Is it wrong to ask God for things I need?
Not at all. Jesus told us to ask for daily bread, which includes the payslip that has to stretch. The prayer here is that the asking does not become the only relationship we have with him. Wanting God himself is what keeps us steady when the answers are slow.
We pray these together every Thursday
