A Prayer When You Cannot Forgive Someone Who Hurt You

The Grace of Forgiveness · Colossians 3:13

By Ricardo Zaal, Founder and Lead Pastor ·

Pray this now

God, I am carrying something I cannot put down. The hurt is old and it still feels fresh, and some days I would rather hold it than let it go. I am not strong enough alone, so I am asking you for strength inside it. Soften what has gone hard in me. Help me take one honest step today, even a small one. Thank you for forgiving me first. Amen.

"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."

- Colossians 3:13

Scripture taken from the Holy Bible, New International Version, NIV. Used by permission.

1. Prayer Requests

If you need Healing, Provision, Peace, Wisdom, Restoration, send it to us on WhatsApp. We pray over every request on Thursday.

2. Recognizing God's Forgiveness

  • Father, thank you for mercy we did not earn and could never repay.
  • God, help us see how far your grace reaches, past the worst thing we have done.
  • Lord, thank you for the forgiveness already working in us, even where we have not noticed it.
  • Jesus, we praise you for a love that has not run out on us yet.

Why we pray this: We start here because forgiving someone else is hard work, and we cannot hand out what we have not received. Christ already did the costly part. Remembering that changes the tone of everything we pray after it.

3. Healing from Broken Relationships

  • Lord, bring peace where words have gone cold between us and someone we love.
  • Father, bring back together what has been pulled apart, and give us the first sentence to say.
  • God, heal what was done to us by someone we trusted.
  • Jesus, give us strength to forgive the person who hurt us most, even if it takes years.

Why we pray this: Healing usually starts before the other person apologises. Sometimes they never will. We pray for the kind of release that does not depend on them changing first.

4. Restoring Trust in Friendships

  • Lord, mend trust that was broken, slowly if it has to be slow.
  • God, give us honest mouths and steady hearts when the easy thing is to say nothing.
  • Father, give us courage to go and ask forgiveness where we are the one in the wrong.
  • Jesus, restore the connections we have quietly written off.

Why we pray this: Trust rebuilds at the speed of small, kept promises. A friendship that survives an honest conversation often ends up sturdier than it was. Most of us are just scared to start that conversation.

5. Releasing Bitterness and Resentment

  • God, free us from the grudge we have been feeding.
  • Lord, take the anger we have carried so long it feels like ours.
  • Father, give us grace to leave the past where it happened.
  • Jesus, heal the wounds nobody can see.

Why we pray this: Bitterness is heavy, and it gets heavier the longer we hold it. Letting go makes room for peace to sit down. It rarely happens in one dramatic moment, so we pray it again and again.

6. Forgiveness in the Workplace

  • God, give us patience with the person who is hardest for us to be near.
  • Lord, hold us steady when a door closes and we did not choose it.
  • Father, bring peace where people who must stand together keep pulling apart.
  • Jesus, strengthen everyone treated unfairly who has no way to defend themselves.

Why we pray this: Forgiveness is more visible under pressure than in any sermon. People notice how we speak about someone who wronged us. That is Christ's love doing something in public.

7. Guidance in Financial Struggles

  • Father, give us wisdom in the decisions we are most afraid to get wrong.
  • God, provide for what is due and overdue, and keep panic from making our choices.
  • Lord, give us peace when the numbers do not add up and the month still has two weeks left.
  • Jesus, give us grace to release what others owe us.

Why we pray this: Anyone who has looked at a payslip in Pretoria North and done the maths twice knows this pressure. We ask for wisdom and for provision. And we ask for peace while we wait, because the peace often comes before the answer does.

8. Forgiving Ourselves

  • God, release us from the voice that keeps reading our failures back to us.
  • Lord, help us receive the grace we hand out so easily to other people.
  • Father, remind us what we are worth to you when we feel worth nothing.
  • Jesus, give us courage to step forward instead of circling the same regret.

Why we pray this: Some of us forgive everyone except the person in the mirror. If God has closed the case, we are not required to keep it open. Receiving his forgiveness means stopping the self-punishment too.

Pray these at home this week

On Thursday we pray the points above together. The ones below are yours for the week.

9. Overcoming Unforgiveness Towards Parents

  • God, heal what was done to us when we were small and had no words for it.
  • Lord, bring peace where the oldest relationship in our life has gone quiet.
  • Father, give us courage to speak about what we have kept silent for years.
  • Jesus, let love take the seat resentment has been holding.

Why we pray this: Old family wounds are the slowest to heal because they shaped us before we could name them. This one is for praying at home, in your time. Courage and grace are both needed, and God supplies both.

10. Coping with Betrayal by a Friend

  • God, comfort us where trust was broken by someone close.
  • Lord, give us strength to forgive from deeper than our words reach.
  • Father, give us wisdom to know when to rebuild trust and when to wait.
  • Jesus, give us hope for friendships that are honest and safe.

Why we pray this: Betrayal by someone close cuts in a way a stranger never could. God has a history of redeeming exactly this kind of wound. Pray it at home, as often as you need to.

11. Letting Go of Regrets

  • God, release us from the mistakes we keep rehearsing at 2am.
  • Lord, give us hope that something new can still start from here.
  • Father, give us grace to be present today instead of living backwards.
  • Jesus, give us strength to walk toward what you have put in front of us.

Why we pray this: Regret keeps replaying a scene we cannot edit. Putting it down frees your hands for what is next. Take this one home and pray it through the week.

Why pray this?

Does God get tired of forgiving me?

No. God's forgiveness in Christ was given once and it holds, even on the days you feel like a repeat offender. Praying thanks for it reminds you that you are standing on something settled. That is a steadier place to pray from than guilt.

How do I forgive someone who never said sorry?

You can forgive without their apology, because forgiveness is something you hand to God rather than something you owe the other person. It does not mean pretending the hurt was small. Praying it out loud, even once a week, loosens the grip over time.

Can a friendship ever go back to normal after trust is broken?

It can become something real again, though usually different from before. Trust is rebuilt by small promises kept over months. Praying for honesty and courage helps you stay in the conversation instead of walking away from it.

Why can't I stop feeling angry at someone?

Because anger often sits on top of a real injury that was never acknowledged. You are not failing when the feeling comes back. Each time you pray it over to God, you are putting it down again, and that practice does change you.

How do I deal with a colleague I can't stand?

Start by asking God for patience before the day starts rather than after the argument. You do not have to like someone to treat them well. People watch how you talk about a person who wronged you, and that is where forgiveness becomes visible.

What do I pray when I can't pay my bills?

Pray for wisdom with the next decision, for provision, and for peace while you wait. God is not a vending machine, so we ask rather than demand. On a Thursday at 19:00 in Pretoria North there are people praying this exact thing beside you.

How do I forgive myself for something I did?

By accepting that God's forgiveness covers you too, not only everybody else. Carrying the punishment yourself does not add anything to what Christ already did. Praying for release from self-condemnation is a real prayer, and it is answered slowly and surely.

How do I forgive my mom or dad for how they raised me?

Start small and start honestly, and do not rush yourself. Naming the hurt in prayer is the first move, long before any conversation with them. Courage and grace both come from God, and he gives them at the pace you can handle.

How do I get over being betrayed by a close friend?

Let yourself grieve it properly, because the loss is real. Ask God for comfort first, then for the strength to forgive, then for wisdom about what happens next. Rebuilding trust is a separate decision from forgiving, and you are allowed to take your time.

How do I stop thinking about my past mistakes?

You stop by handing the same thought back to God every time it returns, especially at night when it is loudest. The memory may stay, but its weight changes. Praying for grace to be present today pulls your attention back to what is in front of you.
