This message is for you if:

  • You feel frustrated working with people who want the same goal
  • You're doing your part but progress still feels stuck
  • You need to lead people without constant conflict and blame
  • You've invested effort but teamwork keeps breaking down

Busy Is Not the Same as Moving Forward

You can see it everywhere. A family trying to handle money together but one person wants to save and the other spends. A work team where everyone says they want the same deadline but nobody agrees on how to get there. A church or volunteer group where people show up and do tasks, but nothing seems to actually change.

Pastor Ricardo Zaal unpacks the real issue: movement without agreement creates friction. Everyone moves. Everyone tries. But when there is no alignment on the vision and the method, all that energy pulls in opposite directions. It is like trying to drive to Johannesburg where one person insists on a helicopter, another refuses to fly and wants a car, and a third is terrified of the highway. You all need to arrive at the same place. You all want to get there. But without agreement on how, you end up on separate routes and never arrive together.

The Bible speaks directly to this in Amos 3:3. It asks a simple question that cuts through all the busy-ness: "Can two walk together except they be agreed?" Movement that matters requires agreement first. Action without alignment is not progress. It is just noise.

Agreement Comes Before Action

This is the hard truth nobody wants to hear. You cannot skip the alignment step. You cannot say "let's just get moving and figure it out later." When Genesis 11:6 describes a people who were united, the Bible shows what became possible: "And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one. And they have all one language. And this they become to do. And now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do." When people are truly aligned, there is almost nothing that stops them.

But the moment there is confusion or disagreement on the direction, everything breaks. In the very next verse, God scatters their languages and their unity shatters. Confusion kills alignment. When people do not truly understand each other or do not agree on what they are trying to accomplish, they stop moving together.

Before you launch anything, you need alignment. Before you ask people to work, they need to agree on the vision and on their role in it. This is not wasted time. This is the foundation that makes everything else actually work.

Three Things That Build Real Unity

First: someone must lead the conversation and set the direction. Not by command, but by clarity. If two people both volunteer to wash the dishes but nobody agrees who dries, you have chaos. Leadership means deciding who does what and making sure everyone knows. The leader shapes whether the group moves forward or falls apart.

Second: communicate without accusation. This is where most teams fail. The moment you say "You always make me feel" or "You never listen" or "Because of you I can't," you have stopped talking about the problem and started blaming the person. Switch to "I feel" and "I see something not adding up" and watch the entire tone change. Accusations create defensiveness. Honest feelings create understanding.

Third: repeat the vision constantly. Do not assume people remember or stay aligned just because you explained it once. Deuteronomy 6:6 says to teach these things "diligently unto thy children" and speak of them "when thou standest in the house and when thou walkest by the way and when thou liest down and when thou risest up." Repetition is not nagging. It is how you keep everyone pointed in the same direction. The more you remind people of the shared goal, the more they love it and the stronger the unity becomes.

Clarity Breaks Confusion. Confusion Breaks Everything.

A confused mind never decides. A confused team never moves. When people do not understand the vision or do not agree on the path forward, they start moving in their own directions. One person builds while another tears down. One person makes plans while another ignores them. The ship gets pulled left and right and goes nowhere.

The pastor uses a simple image: imagine a boat with two rowers. One rows left. One rows right. The boat does not go forward. It rocks and fails. But when both rowers pull in the same direction with the same rhythm, the boat cuts through the water. That is unison. That is alignment.

This works in families. A child raised by parents who agree on discipline and values does not throw tantrums in stores because that standard was set from the start. It works in workplaces. A team that knows exactly what the goal is and how each person fits performs without constant friction. It works in churches. When believers truly understand the vision and agree on it, nothing can stop them. Acts 2 shows the apostles all in one place with one accord, and the result was unstoppable movement.

The Greek Word That Changes Everything

The word for agreement in Amos 3:3 carries a weight that a single English word cannot fully capture. True agreement is not just intellectual consent. It is being on the same page so completely that your movements match. When two people agree, they move as one body, not as two separate wills that happen to occupy the same space.

This is why communication without understanding is so dangerous. You can speak the same language and still completely misunderstand each other. Body language, tone, intent, history, all of these shape what a person actually hears when you speak. That is why the Bible warns us to communicate clearly and listen carefully. Without that, agreement is impossible.

What Actually Stops Friction and Moves Things Forward

The answer is not more effort. It is not more meetings. It is not working harder. The answer is alignment before action. Before you move, agree. Before you act, make sure everyone sees the same vision and understands their role in it. Before you push forward, make sure the people around you are not just with you but with you in the same direction.

When that happens, movement becomes unstoppable. Not because people are working harder, but because all the effort is pulling the same way. That is the difference between being busy and actually making progress. That is the difference between a team that fractures and a team that changes things.

"Everybody's moving, but if they're moving in different directions, nothing actually changes."

- Pastor Ricardo Zaal

Key Takeaways

  1. Alignment Before Action Do not skip the agreement step. Before launching any effort, any project, any change, sit down with the people involved and make sure everyone sees the same vision and understands what is expected. This is not wasted time. It is the only thing that makes the rest of the work actually matter. A confused team moves in chaos. An aligned team moves mountains.
  2. Leadership Sets the Direction, Not the Blame Someone needs to lead the conversation and make clear decisions about who does what and where you are going. But that leader must communicate without accusation. The moment you point fingers, you kill alignment. Switch from blame to honest feeling, from accusation to clarity, and watch unity form. People align around a clear vision, not around punishment.
  3. Repetition Builds Unity Do not assume one conversation is enough. Remind people of the shared goal constantly. When you keep reinforcing the vision, people internalize it, love it, and stay pointed in the same direction. This applies to raising children, leading teams, running organizations, building anything with other people. Constant reinforcement of direction is how unity becomes habit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my team to actually agree on something instead of just pretending to?

Lead the conversation yourself. Ask directly: do you see the same vision? Do you understand why this matters and what your role is? Make people say yes or no, not just nod along. Once someone has actually agreed out loud, they are much more likely to stay aligned. And do this before you ask them to act, not after.

What do I do when people keep reverting to blame and accusations?

Stop it immediately. Teach people to say "I feel" instead of "You always." Model it yourself. When you mess up, say "I did not communicate clearly" instead of making someone else the problem. It takes practice, but once people see that honesty is safer than blame, they will shift. Consistency and repetition are key.

Is unity really more important than having the smartest person in the room?

Yes. A brilliant person working alone or against the group will go slower than a mediocre team moving in unison. The A-Team needed B.A. Baracus even though he was afraid of flying. They could not leave him behind because his strength was essential. A united team with each person pulling in the same direction accomplishes what individuals never can.

we are having discussions. And our discussions that we have is like we're not making it clear for everybody to understand what we want to do. No. And that is why I've entitled my message today, everyone is moving. Everyone is moving. It's like this movement. There's no way that there's no movement. My message entitled, everyone is moving, but nothing is changing. everyone is moving but nothing is changing it's like everybody put in a lot of effort to do something everybody put in prayers like literally literally prayers and somebody is trying to lead but people don't respond the same a saying that says what what's good for the gis is good for the gandau something like that english saying nah did we ever hear about that one what's good for one must be good for the other that's the plain and simple part i don't know this english english but yeah whatever it says but sometimes it's like the progress feeling too slow and every time tension rises you know what tension rises what i mean by that is that we want to go to jobe Everybody knows that we need to go to Jobek. But the one is too afraid of helicopter. The other one is too afraid of car. The other one is too afraid of taxi. So each one is afraid of each individual transportation Making it hard for all of them to decide how will we get to Joburg Making it hard to decide what we will do. We know we must be there in Joburg. We know we must be there by 10 o'clock. But because of each and every one's, what is that thing called? fear of certain things make each and everyone to go on their own route. I hope you can understand where I'm going with this. Because if I want to go there fast, I will use helicopter. but somebody who is afraid of heights doesn't want the helicopter will never ever go helicopter who's this guy there was a guy that we we used to watch in the 80s ah bishop you will know this one you know the the the Murdoch, what was it? B.A. That's the name. B.A. You remember that guy, B.A. Murdoch, what was it? I can't remember all the names, but what was happening that every time, whenever they needed to go somewhere, they will inject him to go so that they can use a helicopter to take him. you see while somebody is scared but everybody knew they need that guy they can't leave him behind they can't there's no way you can leave behind because there won't be the strength of the team one is clever the other one is this you understand they make plan but the plan always include being The A that the name that the name the A Now my question to you is if you looking at that picture I painting to you now how will somebody comes to the front and fight a giant and they don have strength Why do you leave the giant fighter at home? some of us we have a tendency of wanting to go somewhere but there's always this baggage that doesn't allow you to move faster there's this baggage and the Bible makes it clear the Bible says it so clearly Amos 3 verse 3 I want you to think about it Amos 3 verse 3 can two walk together except they be agreed one thing I can tell you now is Every time, whenever we do certain things, there's a problem. Movement without agreement creates friction. What is the vision? The vision is to go there to Job. But because of you have not agreed on a transportation, there's friction. You have not agreed on transportation. There's friction. It's not the lack of the effort to put in. It's not. No. It's nothing to do with that. It's the lack of alignment. To align. To align as to what is the way forward, that is where the problem comes in. We sang a song in the morning. As a matter of fact Levan can you move that camera with me But don move the tripod because you need to bring it back again Yeah, make it so. We see the handle. No, the handle. Yeah, from there. You move it here. Right. Right. Yeah. The other way around, I think it's there. Yes, can you feel it's loose? Now bring it here. Oh, don't move the cable. Look. Okay. Okay. then drop it down or just handle it yeah just handle it so that you can see bishop there's this song it is so much power if we stand together we take a change God can only work through us if we are one. And how can the world see Christ if there's no unity? God can only work through us if we are one. And how can the world see Christ If there's no unity This is how I pray Lord, make us one Make us one Make us one Make us one God make us one And if we stand together We can make a change God can only work to us If we are one And I can only work to us Don't see Christ if there's no unity. This is so great. You know, that's why. Huh? Say again. You understand? Where I'm heading, it's never about it's never about the do you call it the the journey it's about aligning each other onto what the journey should be like I think you have one that is lower it's never about the journey, it's about the agreeing and the alignment of the journey so I wanna take this moment and ask you If it is that we want to go somewhere, no. There's something, something is not adding up. I can't allow you to hold it the whole day. It will take forever, it will be very long. Oh. Yeah, okay. All of these things is not. Okay. Okay. All of them. As I check now, just turn it this way. No. Yeah. And then you just make it straight. down the side. Not too much, not too much. Yeah that it So when you looking at all this when two walk together and they have not agreed they're not walking together. That I can guarantee you now. Because when they walk together, it can help them to be strengthened. You cannot walk together without agreement, but you can stand together. You can talk together, but walking, no agreement. There was a problem that I can say of working together without agreement is that people will move, but they will move in different directions. They will move in different directions. Now, my question to you is that should you want to do something and it's the need for others to help you with. the unfortunate part is that you will not be able to move unless you agree on it we had an issue I think a week or two back where there was this fight with my wife saying to this one of my children the whole time calling the name. You will do it. You will do it. And I'm hearing what she is saying, not knowing the whole situation behind the story. And I got angry at one of my children, and I said to him that if there's a problem, you need to move. then afterwards i hear is because the two of them that were supposed to do this thing together did not agree on the terms of how it should be done and it causes friction so i won't do it if you if you don do your part no no no but i want to do that So the disagreement makes the whole part to be wrong because of no agreement on what the terms going You get my point. There's no agreement there. Already they're fighting each other because they don't agree. you understand? so the problem of people is that they move into two different directions because now while one is building the other one is breaking one is planning while the other one is ignoring the plans let me go to the Bible so it doesn't sound like I'm talking ilavishin. Look at what happened at Bible. Genesis 11 verse 6. Let's go again. Genesis 11 verse 6. And I want you to read. It says, He says, And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one. And they have all one language. And this they become to do. And now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Did you hear? Even the Bible tells you, you have to be together. and the Lord said, behold, the people is one. When the Lord is even in agreement with you, it won't be a way two or three are gathered. You know, we have the tendency every time whenever we pray and we so much want to seek God to come into our midst. We pray with two or three, I get it, God, you always say you are there. Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye. So when you are alone, He was not there. You forgot the other scripture that says that he will never leave you Now will he forsake you Did you forget that part Whatever you are doing it has nothing to do with whether you are two or three Here you can notice when they were one. Nothing could have stopped them when they were one. So what did God do if you go to seven? Let's read verse seven. What did God do? In verse 7, he says, Go to let us go down, and they confound the language, that they may not understand one another's speech. Go to let us go down, and they confound the languages, So there's confusion and the confusion break unity. One thing you should understand is that when communication happens, if you don't know how to communicate, there will always be a language barrier. You can speak the same language. Yes, you can speak the same. You know exactly what the person is saying, but your interpretation is wrong. How do you interpret somebody? It's by not just listening to the words. I was listening to one of the guys who was making fun of the colors. And one of the things that he says, if a colored ask you, what say he? It's not because he didn't hear what you were saying. It's not because he didn't hear what you were saying. The moment he says, what say he? And he's standing like this. You must know he just want to make sure that he heard you correctly. Are you wanting to fight? So when you when somebody is saying, what say he? It's not to say what he means is what he said. It's a different thing. His body language will tell you. Huh? You understand? Because when the body language is in a fighting mode. And hello. Hello. Does not mean I have greeted you. Bishop. I am teaching you colored language. Hello. Does not mean I have greeted you. I am angry at you and I want you to know. So when somebody says, hello, can you hear the difference? So communication, even it's the same language, there's a difference. So you need to understand each other. But sometimes I have an issue with my, do you call it understanding? Because sometimes my understanding is there and I'm trying to explain, but I explain it to a university child, to a crash guy. because they are so did you hear what I said a university child to a creation guy because when I look at some people they never grow even when they're old they still need to speak we need to speak to them as if they are children I'm asking forgiveness. If I trap on your toes, I'm asking forgiveness. But I want you to understand that at the end of the day, things happen because of language barriers. Agreement is not said. If we stand together, we can make a change. God can only work to us if we are one How can the world see Christ if there is no unity This is my prayer, Lord. May it as well. If you can understand, you are in situations a lot of times where just unity will take you further in life than anything else. Giants stand on each other's shoulders. I don't know. Bishop, why am I thinking it's not a scripture? Is that a scripture? It's not a scripture. It's not. Why am I thinking it's a scripture? Okay, but let's just say a saying goes that giants stood on each other's shoulders. So, so, so this. So, scours. So when giants stood upon each other's shoulders, they can see far. Confusion breaks unity. I sometimes say everything I've been preaching has come to the year of action. Because if I can tell you now, many people can say we believe, many people can say we trust God, many people can say whatever they want to say, but if there's no action, it's bad. It's not going anywhere. It's not going anywhere, right? but hear this carefully. Action without you agreeing, it's dangerous. Because this is what happened. We are all moving, but the problem is we're moving in different directions. It not to say that we are not busy We are busy but each one have their own vision And because of that it makes the whole ship not to be steered correctly When unison happened, it's when a rowing of a boat becomes a unison of movement. Let me explain. when somebody says let's turn left on a boat and the guy rowing to the right and the other guy rowing to the left the boat doesn't go so it goes it pulls both directions and you off on off on because one is trying to go left, one is trying to go right. And that is how unity makes us to go far. If you work together, knowing what is the end result. What is the end result in a service like this? The end result in a service like this is that you need to take something out of this whole message. Even if you can take one thing and implement it, you will be fine. You will be far. And once people are in unison, I can tell you, they're making unstoppable movements. Must I explain? apostles. The apostles and when the day of Pentecost was fully they were all with one accord in one place. One accord. Bishop, there's something that people don't understand there is that But you can be a domko like you don have an understanding of certain things But the moment you surround yourself with people of wisdom there no way that it won rub off There's no way that it won't rub off. Picture being in one place with that person. how much powerful things will happen. So, before you do anything, I'm wrapping up. No, I'm not wrapping up. No, no, no. Just now I sound like other preachers who say, it's about one minute, one minute, then I'm done. Then one hour after that is still one minute, I have her time. Where's... Where's time? You see? She can bring me the phone so that I can put the time here. I can't see. I can't see time. Wow. So let me give you an alignment side on everything I've said. number one number one number one even if you want to conquer the world don't conquer the world alone align with somebody before you start moving so you can almost call it alignment before you execute or before action alignment before action yeah i think it sounds better does it sound yeah so when you wanna when you wanna do a conference like the one that we are about to go for we need to align first with everybody so that before we go there everybody should agree that they want this thing people must agree Because if you go to Amos 3 verse 3, it says it all. Can two walk together except they be agreed? So do you see the same vision for it or do you understand the goal? If you don't see the vision or you don't understand the goal, you might be getting into trouble. And it will create friction. and how do you help people is literally you train them because remember even when the bible says in proverbs 22 verse 6 for kids specifically this is now i'm talking about your younger he says train up a child in the way we should go and when he is old he will not depart from it so you must train how does unison work you know how unison work when you two have decided when you three have decided we're going to wash the dishes who is going to do what the moment you've agreed upon that the dishes will be washed within no time so how do you do it is a lot of things that comes in into consideration number one who must lead the conversation because the leader of the conversation can either break or make this movement somebody needs to lead because if one says no I'm going to wash and another one also said I'm going to wash who's going to dry who's going to back away so now there's two people that do the wash then somebody will decide no you're going to do this and you're going to do that. And that is number one, the lead to lead. Number two is to communicate without accusing Accusations is most of the time The biggest Error. In communication. Because it's all about you. You. You. You. When the finger. When the finger shows. To you. It's a problem. You always make me feel like this. You always make me do this. You always. Accusation does not bring an alignment. If you can stop the you and say, I feel like this is wrong. I can guarantee you now all your conversations will be better. All your conversations will be better. How can your conversations be better when you're focusing on others, expecting them to be like what you want them to be? if I want to become a doctor I can't be saying Ma it's because of you that I can't become a doctor now you don't have money for me to go and study you can't say that you know why I'm saying that because when you say that you taking your own fault out and making it about others. If you would have studied better, you could have gotten a... What is that? Ma, help me that thing. You get money for what? Basari. Yeah. You get my point what I'm trying to say. So a conversation should never be a pointing fingers. it should be I am sorry I do feel something is not adding up and make that clear because that is how you create unity. And you know when you train your kids the more you do it repetition maybe correct them If you do that consistently the kid will later apply it I was having an issue when my kids were very young. like okay let me not talk about this I'm talking about the other kids my eldest whenever they would go to the shop they would they would look at things wanting it but not say a word when you come to the tell then you will say I wanted that and you didn't think that they wanted. But because of the discipline their mother showed them, they would never do that. Asking for anything in the shop, they would say the question like this, I'm looking at this thing and I'm thinking, is there money? Can we get it if there's money? That's what they will ask. And I realized at that time I did not even know this one's mother. But then when this one came, the same concept moved over to them. They don't go and throw tantrums in the stores. They don't throw tantrums. They don't. You know, Hey man, Bishop, Oh did it It come back now So, the way they throw tantrums that you as a mother, you feel embarrassed. I don't know about you, have you gotten to that thing? Because me, I've never seen it. Kids throwing tantrums. I've not seen it. Because what we have done is we have trained them from the beginning. Hey, you can't. No, you don't allow them to do that from the beginning, because once you allow it once, you are done. You finish. You have set a standard. If they scream, chocolate, you give chocolate. If they scream, cold drink, you give cold drink. The day when there's no money, then they avoid tantrums like that. Train them. Because when you walk with them in the store, you will see flames you will feel so embarrassed that you don't want your kids to go to your store ever and the poor kids don't know how to work with money because their mother and father never taught them how to buy a grocery it starts all with unison, the unity of telling them, if I have it, I can buy it. If I don't, I'm sorry. And the one thing that you need to know, Deuteronomy 6, let me, let me, let me 6 verse 6, and these words which I command thee this day shall be in thine heart and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children and shall talk of them When thou stand house and when thou walkest by the way and when thou liest down and when thou risest up. What this simply means is that God telling your children what is the vision. Constantly telling your team members what is the vision. Constantly telling your co-workers what is the vision. because when you do that, they will love the vision daily and it will create unison. Do you know most of the time our what is that thing called most of the time our problems come from confusion. because a confused mind doesn make up his mind So clarity brings unity. If you can understand where we're heading, you will understand how we need you. How we need you. Please, if I say to you, go to let them and they confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. If we cannot understand one another's way of saying, unity breaks. Unity unfortunately is not a feeling Unity is an agreement in one direction Where are we disagree? Because where we disagree, we need to come to a point where we understand what is the way forward. Because agreement produces movement, but not just movement, but movement in one direction. You remember I said everybody's busy moving, but they're moving in different directions. With unity, it can be done. I exalt your name. I lift your name high, mighty God. God the one thing I like about the fact that there a lot that works together and therefore we can work together When Jesus says I am in my Father is in me it already shown us how unity works and therefore today we can use that example to go forward. Confusion. I come against every spirit of confusion. And I say to you, you have no hold over anyone here. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen and amen. Now this part I'm quite close
