Can grief actually change me for the better?
Pretoria North · 22 September 2026

That question feels almost wrong to ask. Like it dishonours the person you lost, or makes the pain sound useful in some cheap way. It is not cheap. Grief is heavy and real and nobody signs up for it. But somewhere in the quiet, you may have noticed something shifting in you. A softness. A slowing down. A depth you did not have before. David knew this. He had been through loss and pressure that would undo most of us, and he wrote these words without flinching:
"It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes."
- Psalm 119:71 (KJV)
Think of one thing grief has changed in you, something real, even small. Maybe you hold people a little tighter now. Maybe you pray more honestly. Write it down on your phone or a scrap of paper and keep it today. Let it be proof that God has not wasted a single day of your sorrow.
Lord, I did not choose this pain. But I trust You enough to believe You are at work in it. Form something good in me through what I have carried. Do not let my grief be wasted. Amen.
