What to Do When You Feel Stuck and Cannot Move Forward

You push and nothing moves. You push harder and still nothing. Everyone around you seems to be going somewhere, and the worst part is that you cannot point to what you did wrong.

Before you decide you are the problem, know that being stuck is almost always a symptom. Something underneath is causing it, and until you find that, pushing harder only wears you out.

Three things that keep people stuck

Wrong direction, full effort. A bakkie stuck in sand spins its wheels harder the more you accelerate. Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is stop, get out and look at where the wheels are pointing.

A decision you are dodging. Most stuck lives have one decision at the root. Something you know you need to start or stop, and you have not committed yet. That one hanging decision jams everything attached to it.

A quiet season you are reading as a delay. Some stillness is foundation work, the kind that looks like nothing from outside. Jesus spent about thirty years in a carpenter's house before three years of public work. The ratio looks wrong until you see what came out of it.

"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."

What breaks it

First, get clear before you get busy. Write down where you think you are stuck and what you believe is blocking you. Half the time you will find you already know, and you have been hoping to avoid it.

Second, make the one decision. Not ten. One. Most stuck seasons break on a single committed choice that everything else can line up behind.

Third, pray about it early, not as a last resort. Tell God where you are stuck in plain words, the way you would tell a friend. You can see ten metres of the road. He can see all of it.
