The Cost of Sitting on the Sidelines
You already know what you need to do. The only thing stopping you is waiting for conditions to be just right-and that wait might cost you everything.
Pastor Ricardo Zaal · Fountain of Grace International, Pretoria North
Why Winners Get Remembered and Spectators Get Forgotten
The world celebrates winners. When someone wins an election, a championship, or builds a business empire, we talk about them for years. But here's what gets overlooked: the people who never entered the game get talked about even less. They get forgotten entirely.
The real tragedy isn't losing. Losers still have a name, a place in history, a story. The real tragedy is never showing up at all. The woman with the issue of blood had every excuse to stay home. She was broke, ritually unclean, socially rejected, and physically broken from twelve years of bleeding. But she pushed through anyway and touched Jesus's garment. Two thousand years later, we still know her name-not her given name, but her story. She's remembered because she showed up.
When you sit on the sidelines criticizing others, you produce nothing. You contribute nothing. You become nothing. The moment you step into the game-even if you're afraid, even if you're broken, even if you fail-you become part of the story that matters.
The Excuses That Keep You Stuck
Listen to what people say when they're about to make a change: "I'm too dirty. I'm too sinful. I'll come to church when I get my act together." "People will judge me." "I don't have enough money." "I'm not ready yet." "I don't understand enough." "I don't feel it right now." "I'll do it when I have more time." "I'll start my business when I have enough capital." "I'll get married when my finances are perfect." "I'll go back to school when conditions are right." "I'll go to the gym when I have time."
Every single one of these is a variation on the same lie: that perfect conditions come before action. They don't. Action comes first. The woman with the issue of blood didn't wait until she was clean. She didn't wait until she had money or social approval or perfect health. She moved. And because she moved, God moved. Isaiah 1:18 says, "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow." Jesus didn't ask her to be perfect first. He just asked her to show up.
Thomas Edison failed 999 times before inventing the light bulb. Walt Disney got fired from a newspaper for lack of creativity. Oprah Winfrey was told she wasn't fit for television. Did they wait for perfect conditions? No. They showed up, they tried, they failed, they kept going. And they're remembered because of it.
Being Broken Is Not Disqualification
Some of you think you're too messed up. Too much of a drinker. Too much of a failure. Too rejected by everyone around you. The demon-possessed man in Mark 5 was rejected by society. He was so broken that people chained him and threw him out. But Jesus restored him-not because the man deserved it, not because he was perfect, but because he showed up in front of Jesus.
The prodigal son was covered in pig filth. He didn't wait to shower and change clothes before going home to his father. He went as he was, dirty and broken, because staying where he was meant death. His father didn't turn him away for his condition. He ran to embrace him. When you move toward Jesus, toward change, toward obedience-even broken and afraid-God moves toward you.
1 Samuel 16:7 says God looks at your heart, not your appearance. While people are judging your clothes, your past, your failures, your smell, your accent, God sees the one who operates the heart. He's looking at whether you're willing. God is not bothered about your perfection. He's bothered about your willingness.
Delayed Obedience Is Disobedience
You know when someone says "I'll give my life to Christ when I'm older"? That's not a plan. That's a gamble with your life. Your son could die at twelve. Your friend could be in an accident tomorrow. The rich man in Luke 12 kept building bigger barns, thinking he had time. Then he died in his sleep without warning. 2 Corinthians 6:2 says, "Now, now is the time of God's favor. Now is the day of salvation."
Delayed obedience is also disobedience. You could have done it now, but you chose not to. You waited. You made excuses. Every day you delay is a day the breakthrough doesn't happen. Every month you wait to start your business is a month someone else gets ahead. Every year you put off the relationship conversation is a year wasted.
Moses wasn't perfect. Peter denied Jesus three times. Paul persecuted Christians. But when they were called, they showed up. And God used them in ways that echo through history. God doesn't call the qualified. He qualifies the called. All He needs is for you to move.
Faith Without Action Is Just Talk
James 2:18 cuts through all the religious noise: "Show me your faith without deeds and I will show you my faith by my deeds." Faith is not a feeling. Faith is not what you say you believe. Faith is what you do when you're afraid and you do it anyway.
You can say you have faith in God, but if you don't show up to church, don't take the risk, don't step out in business, don't have the hard conversation, don't go back to school-your faith is empty words. The woman with the issue of blood didn't say, "I believe Jesus can heal me." She believed it, and then she pushed through the crowd and touched His garment. That's faith. That's actionable.
Second Corinthians 5:7 says, "We walk by faith, not by sight." You don't wait to see the whole staircase before you take the first step. You can't see the end of the stairs unless you start climbing. Take the step. Start the business. Make the call. Go to church. Sign up for school. Join the gym. Do the thing. Because when you move, God will move too.
Start Now, Wherever You Are
You don't have to be qualified. You don't have to be ready. You don't have to feel it. You just have to start. The woman with the issue of blood didn't wait until she was healed to believe. She believed while she was still bleeding. She moved while she was still sick. And the moment she touched Him, she was made whole.
If it's a business you want to start, start now. Not when you have enough money. Start with what you have. If it's prayer you want to practice, start now. If it's a relationship you want to pursue, start now. If it's your health you want to fix, start now-take one block walk, then two blocks, then three. Success and healing don't come when conditions are perfect. They come when you step out in faith.
Philippians 4:13 says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." You're not strong enough on your own. You're not qualified enough on your own. But through Christ, you are. Stop waiting for the feeling. Stop waiting for permission. Stop waiting for perfect. Step out in obedience, and watch what God does.
"God will show up only when you show up. If you sit and wait for Him, you're telling Him you're playing for the wrong team."

Key Takeaways
- Being in the Game Beats Sitting on the Sidelines The worst position to be in isn't losing. It's never playing. Losers still have a story, a name, a place in history. People who never tried don't even get mentioned. Every great person in history-Edison, Disney, Oprah, David-faced failure and critique. But they were in the game. They took action despite fear, despite not being ready, despite being told it was impossible. You don't have to be perfect to participate. You just have to show up.
- Excuses Are the Enemy of Action "I'm not ready." "I don't have enough money." "People will judge me." "I'm too broken." "I don't feel it." "I'll do it when conditions are right." Every excuse is a variation on the same lie: that the world will hand you perfect timing. It won't. Perfect timing doesn't exist. The woman with the issue of blood had more reasons to stay home than reasons to push through the crowd. But she moved anyway. And that movement changed everything. Your excuse is costing you the life you could be living.
- Delayed Obedience Is Disobedience When God calls you to do something-start that business, have that conversation, join that church, go back to school, make that change-delaying is the same as refusing. You're saying, "Not now. Maybe later. When things are better." But later never comes. The perfect moment never arrives. The only moment you have is now. You don't see the whole staircase, but you can see the first step. Take it. Because when you move in obedience, God moves with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I try and fail? Won't that be worse than not trying at all?
No. Failure still puts you in the game. You have a story, a lesson, experience. Sitting on the sidelines gives you nothing but regret. The woman with the issue of blood risked public shame by touching Jesus. She risked everything. But she did it anyway-and she was healed. Even if you fail, you're still ahead of the person who never tried.
How do I know if I'm waiting for perfect conditions or if I'm just being smart and strategic?
Ask yourself: Am I taking small steps toward this goal, or am I waiting for all the pieces to fall into place? If you're taking action-saving money while you plan to start a business, learning while you prepare to change careers, having conversations while you heal a relationship-that's strategy. If you're sitting still and making excuses, that's waiting for perfect. Real strategy includes taking action now, not waiting for conditions to be ideal. Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
What if other people are judging me for stepping out?
They will judge you. The woman with the issue of blood knew she would be judged. She was unclean, broke, desperate. But she didn't let their judgment stop her from getting to Jesus. 1 Samuel 16:7 says God looks at your heart, not your appearance. While people judge what they see on the outside, God sees inside. Keep moving anyway. The critics who do nothing are always louder than the people who are actually building something.
