Why is my life not improving?

You are sitting with the same problems you had last year. Same account balance. Same tired feeling. Same unanswered questions. And somewhere in the back of your mind a voice says: nothing ever really changes for me. That voice is lying. David wrote these words as an old man, looking back over a life that had valleys in it most of us will never face. And he said he had watched, carefully, over a long stretch of years, and had never once seen a person who trusts God end up finally, completely, abandoned. Not once. Here is what he wrote:

"I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread."

Before you sleep tonight, think of one moment from the last five years when you were sure you would not make it through, and you did. Write it down, with the year and the specific thing that shifted. One moment is enough. Keep that piece of paper somewhere you will find it tomorrow.

What if the improvement you are waiting for has already begun in ways too quiet for you to measure yet?

God, I forget what You have already carried me through. Open my eyes to the road behind me, not just the road ahead. You have not let me go yet, and I trust You are not about to. Amen.
