Why can't I trust it when people are kind to me?

Someone offers to drive you to the airport and your first thought is what they will want back. A neighbour brings food and you are already working out how to repay it. It is a tiring way to live, keeping a ledger on everybody. Maybe someone taught you that nothing is free. Maybe you have simply been burned enough times. Either way, God's love never sends a bill, and this verse says it started before you did a thing to earn it.

"Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."

- 1 John 4:10 (KJV)

The next time someone does something kind for you, say thank you and do nothing else. No favour back, no explanation. Just thank you.

What would change if you let one kind thing land without paying it back?

God, I have been burned enough that kindness makes me nervous. Help me believe that Your love comes with no invoice, and let me take one gift today without keeping score. Amen.
